Module 4 Podcast

My podcast is about the new Laura Hillenbrand book "Unbroken" which is a great book about a WW11 Air Force Lieutenant who survives a plane crash, enemy imprisonment and survives. It is a story of survival, resilience, and redemption. This book is the recommended book for St John's County 2012 read program, the first time a non-fiction book has been chosen. This website is a little outdated and needs to be updated to include some fun sites, links and more information regarding web 2.0 Tools. The latest link about the use of Overdrive for Kindles and other devices is great with a great link to a help site which explains in greats detail how to load and enjoy Kindles, Nooks and other devices. I did look for information about programming in the library and found it to be buried and hard to get to a specific page which detailed what was happening in the library on a given day and I also tried to find a list of AR books for a 4th grader and this I did not find. The facebook was updated and showed some fun things available in the libraries but in general the website needs a little updating and TLC!

Web 2.0 Tools and the Implications

Reading several articles about the newest line of web 2.0 technology is fascinating. One of the main areas of concern for most of the articles is the lack of training for staff and patrons alike. Many patrons and staff are unfamiliar with the latest technology and with the economy down there is little or no funding to train staff. The article about blogging Chen, S. (2009) gives a prime example of how we need to keep up with emerging technology so that libraries can keep patrons and in this changing venue they can know what they are doing. Provide links to training material for Nooks and Kindles, e-mails and computer training.

One of the comments in the article from the Library in New Hampshire Harland, P. (2009) was the great increase in customer service when they spent the time and money in educating their staff and patrons about how to use the 2.0 Tools. When staff can help patrons understand the new services they feel “intelligent and useful” and the patrons get a much better service. The students that come into the libraries today are very technology savvy and when they do have questions they need to feel that the staff understands the process and can help them. Advertising to the patrons of the future also needs to be on the level of today’s technology, fliers and posters without QR codes are a thing of the past, utilize the e-mails, and blogs and make sure the website and library facebook are up to date and exciting.

The social implications of the emerging technology has a wide array of challenges, one of the concerns is that libraries will cease to be useful and that they will disappear. Many of the articles I read said just the opposite and that if libraries keep up with the technology then their roles may change, but the need for books, research, E-Books and public computers and a general gathering place will still be required. Books may change appearance and the number of hard copies may decrease as more and more E-Books and devices appear but some copies of books will always be useful.

Economically, the library is a general meeting place and a resource for learning, as the economy changes I believe that libraries will need to collaborate more and more with schools and the community and be an integral part of their lives.

Web 2.0 is a category of new Internet tools and technologies created around the idea that the people who consume media, access the Internet, and use the Web shouldn't passively absorb what's available; rather, they should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of their communities.


But Web 2.0 isn't just the latest set of toys for geeks, it's the beginning of a new era in technology — one that promises to help nonprofits operate more efficiently, generate more funding, and affect more lives.

These new tools include, but are by no means limited to, blogs, social networking applications, RSS, social networking tools, and wikis.

Web 2.0 is about revolutionary new ways of creating, collaborating, editing and sharing user-generated content online. It's also about ease of use. There's no need to download, and teachers, students and Librarians can master many of these tools in minutes. Technology has never been easier or more accessible to all.

In St. Johns County we have a Facebook Account and that is where we advertise and let the community the events that we have planned in the library. Many people have a facebook account and so the information that will be reaching a lot of different people is invaluable. To communicate with people lately it seems that tools such as facebook are very easy to use and get a lot of information in a short period of time to a large number of people for very little cost. In this time of economic hardships whatever libraries can do with a limited amount of resources will certainly help the situation.

I just wanted to add a note that says, everyone should get a blog site, it is really fun and I am enjoying making mine. I hope you enjoy the trips to England via the pictures and stay tuned as I add the rest of my elements from the 23 Things.

23 Things

I am working with Neflin on my knowledge of the Blogger activities. One of the questions asked by Neflin was how much more time has the internet given me with work etc., As a reference person the internet has given me much easier access to the questions that people have. The internet has freed up more time for extensive answers to problems and allowed me to answer easier questions in a much quicker fashion. One thing I will say though is that on a personal level, the internet has taken up my time with chatting and finding out waht everyone is doing instead of just minding my own business!!

I am working on this new Blog site and the 23 things for USF. This project is fun and exciting follow me as I delve into the world of Libraries and how different each can be. In the future I will be interviewing different librarians and post their comments on this site.
